Jesus is the JOY of Living
Have you ever had a moment in childhood that changed everything? For me, it was my First Communion at age six. The next day I was confirmed, and I remember offering a bouquet of flowers to Our Lady, feeling something I couldn't fully explain—like I had found where I belonged. From that day on, I knew: I wanted to give my life to God.
During my teenage years, I kept singing the same song over and over: "Jesus is the Joy of Living... He's the dearest friend I know." Those words became my prayer as I discerned joining the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I wanted to be a missionary. I wanted joy. And today, after years of living this calling, I can tell you: God has filled my heart with a joy I never imagined possible.
Jesus is the joy of my life because He loves me exactly as I am. No comparisons. No conditions. No fear. Just His tender gaze looking at me with the Heart that gave everything. This love creates a joy that no difficulty, no disappointment, no dark moment can steal away. When you know you're loved like this, everything changes.
My life has meaning because it rests in His hands. When Jesus is at the center, everything else finds its place. His will becomes my peace. His presence becomes my home. His mission becomes my purpose. One of our foundresses, Rafaela Mary, used to say: "All for Jesus!" Not because she had to, but because she wanted to. That's what love does—it makes you want to give everything, joyfully.
The beautiful paradox of this life is that joy multiplies when you give it away. When I console someone who's hurting, when I forgive, when I work for unity, when I let His Heart shine through my simple daily actions—that's when I feel most alive. Joy grows in service, in the small gestures of love that might seem invisible but carry the weight of eternity.
I've lived in many places, with sisters from different countries and cultures. Each move felt like God shaping me into the person He dreamed I could be. Right now, I'm in East Timor—a country I fell in love with the moment I arrived on October 24, 2004, Mission Sunday! East Timor is a young nation, born from struggle and hope. Many people live in remote areas without basic services, far from what we might call comfort. But here's what amazed me: they were so ready to receive, so hungry for something more. It was like planting seeds in the most fertile soil.
And I realized: "Anywhere He leads, I'll go" isn't just a nice phrase. It's trust in action—being willing to follow Jesus even when the road isn't clear, even when it stretches you in ways you never expected. It's living with open hands, ready to be sent, ready to love, ready to serve.
When Jesus is your joy, difficulties don't defeat you. You still get tired. You still feel uncertain. You still hurt. But underneath it all, there's this deep current of joy flowing from His Heart into yours. It's the joy of knowing you're loved, accompanied, and sent with purpose.
As Charles de Foucauld prayed: "Father, I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you." That's when faith becomes trust. When love becomes surrender. When following Jesus becomes a joyful yes—like Mary's "Let it be to me according to your word."
Maybe you've been searching for something. Maybe it's meaning. Maybe it's peace. Maybe it's a love that actually lasts. Jesus is waiting for you. He is the Joy of living. He is the Friend who never fails. He is the One who calls you by name.
What would it look like if you said yes to Him today? Have you ever felt that whisper in your heart—that sense that maybe God is calling you to something more?
